What is a paperclip? Is it just a piece of metal used to hold papers together? Is it just a piece of metal that is wrapped and twisted just to serve our needs? Available in various sizes and colors? No I tell you. It represents the nature of humans. The gentle twists and small ridges that exist in all of our lives echoed so cleanly in the paperclip. The gentle nature at which it curves in on itself, steady and rigid, just as our lives go from place to place from birth, being wrapped in the love of our parents and family until we separate and take a soft curve to being out on our own to curve through our mid-life as we raise our own families and move on to the curve towards old age as our family once again envelops us pulling us close in our waning years. All along holding on to things that are dear and important to us, helping us stay organized emotionally and binding our lives together.
Or it’s just a piece of twisted metal that some fool happened upon years ago, got a patent and made his family and descendants rich and today we find they are fun to link together making chains out of them or opening them up and using a rubber-band to fling them across the room just to get yelled at and told “It’s all fun and games until someone gets an eye poked out.” which of course does happen and then there is the insurance papers, doctor bills and you realize how dangerous those things are and write up a proposal to the government to get a grant to study the dangers of paperclips and then you get the million dollar grant and meet up with a public safety group that convinces you that they can help you with the study and suck up your money before you can produce a good study so then you have to file all these papers with the government explaining where the money went and (inhale)… you have to put it all together with a paperclip.
